Following the rumours that dropped earlier this week, more speculation has emerged indicating that the PSP2 houses twice the RAM of an Xbox 360 console and, as has been suggested in previous reports, that it will not have a UMD drive.
This is according to Kotaku, which suggests that the PSP2 will have 1GB of RAM, double that of the Xbox 360's current 512MB array (the existing PSP houses a mere 64MB).
A memory card solution, similar to Sony's PSPgo, is allegedly in place to account for the lack of a UMD drive for the system, although Sony is apparently still working on its final UMD-less strategy for the system.
Earlier reports indicated that the prototype handheld was demoed in two forms to developers at the Tokyo Game Show earlier this year. One was similar in style to the classic PSP design, while the other looked similar to Sony's PSPgo.
So, to wrap up all the rumours so far, we know that the PSP2 will have a touchpad on its reverse side that's similar to a mouse trackpad, that the screen runs at an 'HD' resolution and is an inch wider than current PSP models, and that it has dual-analogue stick controls. Or do we?
According to a VG247 report, which seemingly outs the PSP2's codename as 'Veta', Sony has released misinformation into the wild to figure out where the multitude of PSP2 leaks are coming from.
That said, some developers have already publicly stated that they have received PSP2 dev kits from Sony, so unless the company is going to the extent of manufacturing bogus dev kits, it's hard to see how the misinformation can help at this stage. Still, as always, it's worth treating these kinds of rumours with a sizeable pinch of salt.
