Treyarch has revealed some new features that it's implementing to Call of Duty: Black Ops' multiplayer game, including redesigns to the existing Killstreak Awards and Perks from Modern Warfare 2 as well as an all-new 'Diving to Prone' gameplay mechanic.
First-up are the Killstreaks, and it seems Treyarch has taken the decision not to use stackable Killstreaks in Black Ops:
"We listened to the community and implemented that Killstreaks don't count towards other Killstreaks," Dan Bunting, the Online Director of Black Ops told Inside Xbox. "There were a lot of complaints about how the rich get richer and it becomes a griefing mechanic, and it encourages people to camp, so we wanted to clear that up a little bit."
Treyarch has also focused on making the Killstreak Awards more interactive, such as picking a spot to dispatch an attack chopper, selecting multiple targets for mortar strikes, and firing directly from the Gatling gun of a circling helicopter.
Perks, on the other hand, have been redesigned around gameplay styles. For example, the 'Perk 1' slot now determines your character model, such as the 'Flak Jacket' Perk that decreases explosive damage and makes your character look like a bomb disposal expert.
There's also a new 'Diving to Prone' mechanic in the game, which is a defensive manoeuvre that can be used to dodge enemy fire at critical moments. The mechanic has been balanced to avoid the pitfalls of so-called 'drop-shotting' in Modern Warfare 2 though, as it takes a moment to pull out your gun again after initiating the 'Diving to Prone' technique.
Last, but by no means least, is Treyarch's decision to re-class shotguns as primary weapons in Black Ops, with the aim being to make these weapons more authentically lethal. It all sounds good to us - bring on November 9th...
